The Legacy of King Ludwig II

You cannot talk about Bavarian castles without mentioning King Ludwig II, often called the “Fairy-Tale King.” In the 19th century, as traditional fortresses became obsolete, Ludwig poured his personal fortune and passion into constructing romanticized, theatrical castles inspired by the operas of Richard Wagner.

While Neuschwanstein Castle is his global masterpiece, his other creations, like the French-inspired Herrenchiemsee and the Linderhof Palace offer a glimpse into the mind of a king who preferred dreams over reality.

Hidden Gems and Regional Highlights

While millions flock to the south to see the Alpine castles, some of Bavaria’s finest treasures are scattered across its historical regions:

  • Franconia & The Upper Palatinate: Northern and eastern Bavaria are rich with medieval history. Here, you’ll find strongholds like the Nuremberg Castle or the Renaissance-styled Schloss Wörth an der Donau, which has kept watch over the Danube river for centuries.
  • The Romantic Road: This famous route winds through western Bavaria, connecting preserved medieval towns like Rothenburg ob der Tauber with fortresses like Harburg Castle.
  • The Bavarian Palaces: In Munich and its surroundings, the Wittelsbach dynasty left behind a large monuments of Baroque and Rococo architecture, including the Nymphenburg Palace and the Munich Residenz.
