Schloss Wiesent

Schloss Wiesent is a Baroque castle anchoring the historic heart of the small Bavarian municipality of Wiesent, just 20 kilometres east of Regensburg. Built in its current form in 1695 by Count Rudolf von Lintelo on foundations reaching back to a medieval fortress from 1264.

What to Do There

  • 🏛️ Visit the Hudetz-Turm Museum: A small, affordable museum in the castle’s east tower dedicated to painter Karl Anton Hudetz and featuring rotating exhibitions by regional artists.
  • ☕ Café Lintelo (Schlosscafé): A historic café-bistro inside the castle walls with a beautiful outdoor Biergarten.
  • 🏰 Explore the Schlossplatz: The castle square doubles as the village square, complete with a historic fountain; ideal for a scenic stroll and photography.

The Hudetz-Turm Museum 🏛️

Named after the Austrian-born painter and graphic artist Karl Anton Hudetz (1890-1977), who lived and worked in this very tower from 1938 until his death, it is today a museum-memorial that preserves his home, his studio, and a substantial collection of his works.
What you’ll see inside: The museum displays original paintings, graphics, and personal items of Hudetz and his wife, artist Karoline Hudetz-Weiß.

Café Lintelo – Schlosscafé & Bistro ☕

Right inside the castle walls sits Café Lintelo, named after the very dynasty “the Counts of Lintelo” who built the Baroque castle in 1695. In operation since 1992, this café-bistro is one of the cosiest places to eat and drink in the Regensburg region, with a atmospheric interior and a sunny outdoor courtyard (Biergarten).

The Josefimarkt – Annual Spring Market 🎪

💡 Tip by author Elias: Every year in late March (the Sunday closest to St. Joseph’s Day, 19 March), the Schlossplatz transforms into one of the region’s most beloved artisan markets. The Wiesenter Josefimarkt draws over 100 exhibitors, and entry is completely free.

History

The site of Schloss Wiesent has been occupied since the medieval period, with a fortress first documented here in 1264, its earliest owners being the Lords of Wiesent. The Counts of Lintelo built the current Baroque main wing in 1695, whose coat of arms still can be seen on the main entrance gate today. A brewery operated on the castle’s northern courtyard until 1881, when it closed. Today the castle is privately owned, splitting its spaces between residential apartments, a daycare centre, and its cultural venues.

Fun Fact:

🗿 Double-listed monument: The complex holds both Baudenkmal status (D-3-75-209-6) and is recorded as an archaeological site in the Bayernatlas (D-3-6940-0045), reflecting its medieval foundations beneath the Baroque shell.
